Originally crafted by Bob Clouser in 1987 for smallmouth bass on the Susquehanna River, the Clouser Deep Minnow (commonly referred to as the Clouser Minnow) has since become a go-to streamer across both fresh and saltwater fisheries. Celebrated for its effectiveness and versatility, it’s regularly cited among the most prolific fly patterns ever conceived. Designed to mimic baitfish, this slender streamer is effective in reaching deeper water—thanks to its weighted eye design that adds both action and sink speed. It’s tied with a sparse profile: two-tone bucktail (a lighter underwing and darker overwing), and Krystal Flash for added shimmer, and dumbbell lead eyes placed about one-third down the hook shank. Overloading the materials diminishes action and slows sinking—keeping it sparse maintains its transparency and appeal.
